Bhutan

Whether you call it the ‘Land of the Thunder Dragon’ or the ‘World’s Happiest Place’, Bhutan will justify all the name tags.  With over 70 percent of the country under forest cover, there is little doubt about it being pristine. From Bumthang to Paro, from Phobjikha to Gangtey, from Haa to Punakha, beauty is equally spread all over Bhutan. The wildlife here is truly remarkable with tigers, red pandas, rhinos, snow leopards and bears, all finding a place in this landlocked country.

Best Time to Visit

September – November, March – May

If it’s clear skies you are looking for then autumn is the best time to visit Bhutan. The monsoon recedes by September beginning and everything seems lush green. October is a great time for hikes and trekking. November gets a bit cold but won’t keep you from outdoors during the day. The autumn is the peak season of tourism in Bhutan.

Spring is another time when it gets really busy in Bhutan. The wildflowers start to bloom starting March and lasting till April. It is a really good time for outdoor adventure activities. May sees a warmer climate with some rains.

June – August

The monsoon makes landing in Bhutan in June and it literally pours. This continues through to August. If you are looking for some good deals and if you love the rains, this is a good time to visit.

December – February

December marks the beginning of winter in Bhutan. The higher regions see snowfall and the mountain passes do get snowed in. January is the coldest month. Trekking and hiking is mostly suspended. However, the falling temperatures and the snow bring out a different side of Bhutan. The major tourist attractions are still open and accessible.

How to Get There

Bhutan is serviced by Paro International Airport. It is the only international airport in Bhutan owing to its mountainous landscape. There are no trains in Bhutan. The road network is quite good. All foreign nationals require permit to enter at the designated entry points along the Border of Bhutan. Buses ply on major routes, however, for a traveller the best bet is renting a taxi from a registered tour operator.
